When you are in your twenties, buying your first property can feel exciting - but also very overwhelming.

There are so many opinions around you. Some people will tell you to buy early. Some will tell you to wait. Some will say private property is the goal. Others will say just get a BTO first.

But the truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. What matters most is not whether you buy young, buy big, or buy fast. It is whether the property decision fits your income, your lifestyle, your risk comfort, and the future you are trying to build.

For first-time buyers in their twenties, I always say this: do not just ask, “Can I afford this property today?”

Ask yourself:

  • Will I still be comfortable if interest rates change?
  • Will this home still work for me in the next 5 to 10 years?
  • Am I buying because it makes sense, or because I feel pressured to catch up?
  • Does this first move give me more options later, or does it lock me in too tightly?

Your first property does not need to be perfect. But it should give you a strong foundation. It should allow you to live comfortably, manage your cash flow, and still have room to grow.

Sometimes, the best move is to buy now. Sometimes, the wiser move is to wait, build more savings, understand your numbers better, and enter the market with more confidence.

Buying young can be powerful - but only when it is done with clarity.

Because your first property is not just a home. It is the first step in shaping your future financial choices.

Thinking about your first move?

Let’s talk it through.
